Honey Mango Salsa Recipe
If I were simply surfing the net and came across the photos in this post, I would literally salivate. The one thing that I absolutely missed all those years I lived abroad was a bowl of sliced green mango served with good bagoong. I could eat all of this on my own. I can feel the crunch of the unripe mango, the slightly astringent, incredibly sour shock to the tastebuds, soon mitigated by the gentle squish of tiny shrimp shells that burst with a salty, briney bagoong flavor. The food was good, but not stellar or anything to write a separate post about. But the bagoong they served with their green mango was a real winner. It was so good, I immediately asked the waiter if I could buy several bottles before we even finished the meal! It is a touch on the sweet side for me, but that is only more reason to sprinkle your green mango slices with some kosher salt before dipping into the bagoong. And if you are abroad staring at your monitors salivating… all I can say is, this is one of the simple things that makes living back home a real pleasure…:

Friday, July 27, Mangrove blossoms by the dock at the Roseland Community Center I woke up with the saddies today, as Sue would have said, for a completely illogical reason which was that I was already mourning leaving. And there was so much I wanted to do which I hadn’t done and only two days to do it all in and oh, well, maybe a little bit of regular old birthday grieving as this is the last day of the sixty-third year of my life.
Roseland figures so hugely in my dream world.
History Native Oaxaca criollo avocados, the ancestral form of today’s domesticated varieties Persea americana, or the avocado, is possibly thought to have originated in the Tehuacan Valley in the state of Puebla , Mexico, although fossil evidence suggests similar species were much more widespread millions of years ago. However, there is evidence for three possible separate domestications of the avocado, resulting in the currently recognized Mexican aoacatl , Guatemalan quilaoacatl , and West Indian tlacacolaocatl landraces.
This evidence was found in an earth mound intended to be a ceremonial structure called Huaca Prieta , kilometers north of Lima , Peru. The earliest residents were living in temporary camps in an ancient wetland eating avocados, chilies, mollusks, sharks, birds, and sea lions. The plant was introduced to Spain in , Indonesia around , Mauritius in , Brazil in , the United States mainland in , South Africa and Australia in the late 19th century, and Israel in In , the California Avocado Association introduced the then-innovative term avocado to refer to the plant.
The earliest known written use in English is attested from as “avogato pear”, a term which was later corrupted as “alligator pear”. In Portuguese, it is abacate. The fruit is sometimes called an avocado pear or alligator pear due to its shape and the rough green skin of some cultivars. Cultivation The subtropical species needs a climate without frost and with little wind.

This happened after I cut up an Alphonso? I am pretty sensitive to Poison Oak, and I now leave the mango cutting to my wife. I have never encountered anyone who had such allergy. There is so far only one single research on this subject, and the same “research” has been referenced by every page attempting to document the subject, all over the internet. I’m afraid it could be simply like the doctor who fraudulently attributed autism to vaccination, which then everyone virally referenced his unverified “research” until some common-sensed people decided to verify his claims.
Ancient history[ edit ] The Pangasinan people, like most of the people in the Malay Archipelago , are descendants of the Austronesian-speakers who settled in Southeast Asia since prehistoric times. Comparative genetics, linguistics and archaeological studies locate the origin of the Austronesian languages in Sundaland , which was populated as early as 50, years ago by modern humans.
Southeast Asian maritime trade network[ edit ] A vast maritime trade network connected the distant Austronesian settlements in Southeast Asia , the Pacific and the Indian Ocean. The Pangasinan people were part of this ancient Austronesian civilization. The ancient Austronesian-speakers were expert navigators. Their outrigger canoes and sailboats were capable of crossing the distant seas. The Malagasy sailed from the Malay archipelago to Madagascar , an island across the Indian Ocean, and probably reached Africa.
As the possible predecessors of the Polynesians , large seagoing canoes called “bangka” ” vaka ” in several Polynesian dialects and ” waka ” in Maori were first developed by Austronesians in the Philippine archipelago which were then used to settle and establish long-distance trade networks with distant Pacific islands from the Micronesian island nations of Guam and Palau as far away as Hawaii and Easter Island and probably reached the Pacific coastline of the Americas.
Proof of these trade exchanges are the prevalence of “kumara” or sweet potato in the Pacific Islands which is endemic to South America, and the abundance of chicken bones in ancient South American archaeological dig sites whose closest genetic relatives are those of chickens from Asia. At least three hundred years before the arrival of Europeans, the Makasar and the Bugis from Sulawesi , in what is now Indonesia , as well as the Sama-Bajaus of the Malay Archipelago, carried out long-distance commerce with their prau or paraw “sailboat” and established settlements in north Australia , which they called Marege.
The Pangasinan people identified or associated banwa with the sun, which was their symbol for their banwa. The Pangasinan people are closely related to the Ibaloi in the neighboring province of Benguet and other peoples of Luzon. The Anakbanwa established their settlements in the banks of the Agno River and the coasts of Lingayen Gulf. The coastal area came to be known as Pangasinan, and the interior area came to be known as Kaboloan.

Sondra Forsyth The next time you suffer from constipation, you may want to consider grabbing a mango instead of reaching for a fiber supplement. The researchers found that mangoes, which contain a combination of polyphenols and fiber, were more effective than an equivalent amount of fiber powder in relieving constipation — a chronic digestive condition that affects an estimated 20 percent of Americans.
Fiber supplements and laxatives may aid in the treatment of constipation, but they may not fully address all symptoms, such as intestinal inflammation. The food intake analysis revealed that the mango and fiber groups consumed equivalent amounts of calories, carbohydrates, fiber, protein and fat. Measures of constipation severity were taken at the beginning and end of four weeks, and both the mango and fiber groups improved over the course of the study.
However, mangos were found to be more effective in reducing the symptoms of constipation in the participants than fiber alone. Mango supplementation significantly improved constipation status stool frequency, consistency and shape and increased short chain fatty acids levels, which indicate improvement of intestinal microbial composition. Mango consumption also helped to reduce certain biomarkers of inflammation. The researchers conclude that more research is needed to determine the mechanism of action involved in the mango protective effect in constipation and which role mango polyphenols may play in supporting the beneficial effects of fiber.
The research was supported in part by funds from the National Mango Board.

Hummingbirds have radiated into a diverse assemblage of specialized nectarivores comprising species, but their evolutionary history has not, until now, been comprehensively explored. Using ancestral state reconstruction and diversification analyses, we 1 estimate the age of the crown-group hummingbird assemblage, 2 investigate the timing and patterns of lineage accumulation for hummingbirds overall and regionally, and 3 evaluate the role of Andean uplift in hummingbird speciation.
Detailed analyses reveal disparate clade-specific processes that allowed for ongoing species diversification. One factor was significant variation among clades in diversification rates. A second factor was colonization of key geographic regions, which opened up new ecological niches. For example, some clades diversified in the context of the uplift of the Andes Mountains, whereas others were affected by the formation of the Panamanian land bridge.
Finally, although species accumulation is slowing in all groups of hummingbirds, several major clades maintain rapid rates of diversification on par with classical examples of rapid adaptive radiation. Previous article in issue.
